What AC9M3M04 actually looks like when you teach it
Reading to the minute is the step where analog time gets genuinely hard, because it needs two different scales read off one dial. The numeral 4 means four o'clock for one hand and twenty minutes for the other, and that dual role has to be taught, not assumed. Count around the face in fives as a class until it's automatic, then add the individual minute marks. Pair analog with digital constantly — the descriptor asks for the relationship between them, and matching pairs of clocks is the clearest way to build it.
What the class will get wrong — and what to do about it
The error
Reading the minute hand as the numeral it points at rather than converting: the minute hand on the 4 read as "four minutes past" instead of twenty past.
How to confront it
Label a clock face with both sets of numbers — 1 to 12 inside, 5 to 60 outside — and leave it up. Remove the outer labels only once the class counts around in fives without hesitating.

Clock pairs
- Deal a set of twelve pairs face down to each group of four.
- Play as a memory game: turn two cards, keep them if the analog face and the digital time match.
- The rule that makes it a maths lesson: you must say the time aloud correctly to keep the pair.
- Circulate and listen for minute-hand misreads — that's your assessment data for the week.
- Finish by asking each group for the one pair they argued about most, and settle it as a class.
