What AC9M2M04 actually looks like when you teach it
Analog time is one of the few things in the Year 2 curriculum that a lot of children have no home exposure to at all, so start further back than you'd think. Spend time on the two hands doing different jobs before you ask anyone to read anything. A geared demonstration clock is worth having, because on a real clock the hour hand moves as the minutes pass, and on most classroom paper clocks it doesn't — which is precisely the thing that confuses children at half past. Read times in sequence across a day rather than at random.
What the class will get wrong — and what to do about it
The error
At half past, reading the hour hand as the hour it's closest to rather than the one it's passed — 3:30 read as "half past four" because the hand sits nearer the 4.
How to confront it
Use a geared clock and move it slowly from 3:00 to 4:00, stopping to ask "which hour have we started but not finished?" The hour hand travelling between numbers, rather than jumping, is the whole explanation.

Our school day
- As a class, list six things that happen at fixed times in your day — the bell, first break, home time.
- Set the demonstration clock to the first one. Move it slowly to the next, narrating what the hour hand is doing.
- Children set their own clocks to each event as you go and hold them up.
- Deliberately stop at a half past and ask which hour it is. Take the wrong answer seriously and resolve it with the geared clock.
- Children draw three of the times onto blank clock faces and label them.
