What AC9M3A03 actually looks like when you teach it
Proficiency is the word to notice — this is recall, not derivation, and it needs distributed practice rather than a unit. Two or three minutes daily beats an hour weekly. But recall built on nothing collapses, so establish each table's structure first: fives end in 5 or 0, tens are the digit with a zero, fours are double-doubles, threes can be found from twos plus one more group. Arrays make the commutative property visible, which halves the number of facts to learn — a point worth making explicitly, because children rarely notice it themselves.
What the class will get wrong — and what to do about it
The error
Treating 4 × 7 and 7 × 4 as two unrelated facts to be memorised separately, which makes the task feel twice as large as it is.
How to confront it
Build a 4 × 7 array on grid paper, then physically turn it ninety degrees. Same array, same total, both facts. Have them shade the multiplication grid to see how few facts are genuinely new.
Ready to put on the board
We are learning to recall the 3, 4, 5 and 10 multiplication facts and the division facts that go with them.
- I can recall these facts quickly and accurately.
- I can use a multiplication fact to state the matching division fact.
- I can explain a pattern in one of the tables.
Shade the grid
- Fill in the tens row and column first, in one colour. Ask what they notice.
- Fill in the fives, in a second colour. What pattern do the last digits make?
- Fill in the fours as double-doubles, then the threes.
- Now the point: ask them to circle any fact that appears twice on the grid. Most of it does.
- Count what's left uncoloured. The job is smaller than it looked ten minutes ago — say so.
