What AC9M4N03 actually looks like when you teach it
Equivalence is the idea that makes everything later in fractions possible, and it's best met physically before it's met as a rule. Fraction walls, folded strips and a number line all show that 1/2 and 2/4 land in the same place. Related denominators means halves and quarters and eighths, or thirds and sixths — pairs where one denominator is a multiple of the other. Resist giving the multiply-top-and-bottom rule early; a child who finds equivalents by folding will later understand why the rule works, and a child given the rule first usually won't.
What the class will get wrong — and what to do about it
The error
Adding across: 1/2 + 1/4 answered as 2/6, by adding numerators and denominators separately as though they were two independent whole numbers.
How to confront it
Ask what 1/2 + 1/2 should be, then apply their method to it — it gives 2/4, which is a half, which is obviously wrong. Letting the method fail on a fact they're sure of is more convincing than a correction.

- I can find a fraction equal to a given fraction using materials.
- I can show two equivalent fractions in the same place on a number line.
- I can write a simple fraction as a decimal.
Same place on the line
- Draw one long 0–1 line on the board. Mark only 0, 1/2 and 1.
- Give each pair a fraction on a sticky note — 2/4, 3/6, 5/10, 1/4, 2/8, 6/8.
- They use fraction strips to work out where it goes, then place it on the line.
- Stand back. Several notes will be stacked at the same point. Ask why.
- Write the stacked sets as equivalence statements, then convert the tenths to decimals to link the two ideas.
