What AC9M3N01 actually looks like when you teach it
Beyond 10 000 the numbers stop being imaginable, so the work shifts to convention: how we group digits, how we say them, how we compare them. Spend real time on the naming convention — the comma or space every three digits, and the fact that we say "thousand" at the break. Comparing large numbers is where you find out who understands: give them two five-digit numbers and ask which is larger and how they knew. "It has more digits" is a good answer. "I looked at the front first" is a better one. Ordering on a partly-marked number line beats a worksheet.
What the class will get wrong — and what to do about it
The error
Comparing large numbers left-to-right digit by digit without first checking length, so 9 876 is judged larger than 12 345 because it starts with a 9.
How to confront it
Make counting the digits the explicit first step, every time, before any comparing. Write both numbers one under the other, right-aligned — the shorter number's empty columns make the answer visible.

Biggest number wins
- Each child draws five empty boxes.
- Roll a digit. Everyone writes it in a box of their choice — once placed, it can't move.
- Repeat five times. The largest number wins the round.
- After each round, ask the winner to say their number aloud correctly, and ask a loser what they'd change.
- Play three rounds, then discuss the strategy: where do you want a 9, and why does the leftmost box matter most?
