What AC9M2N01 actually looks like when you teach it
Three-digit numbers are where place value stops being a rehearsal and starts being load-bearing. Bundling sticks and MAB blocks are worth the mess: a child who has physically traded ten tens for a hundred understands something a chart can't deliver. Order numbers on a partly-labelled line rather than a fully-marked one, so they have to reason about position instead of reading a label. Say the numbers aloud often — the gap between what a child can read and what they can write down at 300 and above is usually bigger than you'd expect.
What the class will get wrong — and what to do about it
The error
Writing what they hear: "three hundred and forty-two" recorded as 30042. The child is treating each spoken part as a separate number and concatenating.
How to confront it
Build it with MAB first, then write it underneath the blocks. Have them say the number, build it, then write it — always in that order — until the written form is the last step rather than the first.
Ready to put on the board
We are learning to read, write and order numbers to 1000.
- I can build a three-digit number with materials.
- I can write a number I hear said out loud.
- I can put three-digit numbers in order and explain how I decided.
Build it, say it, write it
- Say a number aloud — 406. Pairs build it with MAB before anyone writes anything.
- Walk the room. The pairs who build four hundreds and six ones have it; the ones who build four, zero and six need the blocks to argue with.
- Now they write it on the whiteboard, next to the blocks.
- Repeat with 460, then 46. Same digits, three different builds — that comparison is the lesson.
- Finish by ordering the three numbers smallest to largest and explaining the order using the blocks.
