What AC9M2N03 actually looks like when you teach it
Fractions start here, and how you handle equal parts in Year 2 shapes everything that follows. Fold paper, cut fruit, share a strip of paper between two. The word to insist on is equal — a half is one of two equal parts, and a child who has folded a strip carelessly and produced two unequal bits has produced a useful teaching moment, not a mistake to correct quietly. Repeated halving gives quarters and then eighths without introducing any new idea, which is why the descriptor sequences them that way.
What the class will get wrong — and what to do about it
The error
Calling any two parts "halves" regardless of size — a shape split into a big piece and a small piece described as being cut in half.
How to confront it
Offer the class a deliberately unequal split of something they want, like a chocolate bar, and ask who'd take which piece. Fairness makes the equality condition obvious in a way that a definition doesn't.
Ready to put on the board
We are learning that a half is one of two equal parts of a whole.
- I can fold or cut something into two equal parts.
- I can say why two unequal parts are not halves.
- I can make quarters and eighths by halving again.
Halving the strip
- Each child folds one strip in half and cuts. Check: do the two pieces sit exactly on top of each other?
- Fold the second strip in half, then in half again. Open it out — four equal parts. Name them quarters.
- Third strip: halve three times. Count the parts: eighths.
- Glue all three strips one under the other on a page, labelled.
- Ask the key question: which is bigger, a half or an eighth? The glued strips answer it — and pre-empt the classic error that eight is a bigger number so eighths must be bigger.
