What AC9M1N04 actually looks like when you teach it
The aim here is not speed, it's strategy. Children arrive able to count on their fingers and the job is to give them something better: bridging to ten, using doubles, using part-part-whole knowledge to 10. Ten-frames and a bead string make the strategies visible. When you ask 8 + 5, you want to hear "I took 2 from the 5 to fill the ten, then 3 more, so 13" rather than a correct answer arrived at silently. Structure the block so children explain their method to a partner — the explaining is where the strategy consolidates.
What the class will get wrong — and what to do about it
The error
Counting all, then counting on from the first number rather than the larger one — 3 + 9 solved by counting on nine times from three, which is slow and error-prone.
How to confront it
Make it explicit and give it a name: "start with the bigger one". Show 3 + 9 and 9 + 3 with the same counters so they see it's the same total, then race the two methods. The strategy sticks when they feel the difference.

Which strategy?
- Write 8 + 6 on the board. Ask pairs to solve it on their ten-frames and be ready to explain.
- Take three different explanations and record each as a labelled method: bridging to ten, near doubles, counting on.
- Give four more facts. For each, pairs choose a named strategy before they solve it.
- Ask: which strategy suited 9 + 9? Which suited 12 − 3? Different facts suit different methods.
- Exit question: one fact, and they write the strategy name next to the answer.
